Ten stages into the Tour de
France,
Mattias Skjelmose is ready for a break. After a brutal daywith plenty
of elevation, the
Lidl-Trek rider slipped to 15th overall, nearly eight minutes
down on Simon Yates, who took the stage win.
Skjelmose didn’t mince words when
speaking to TV 2 Sport after the stage, “I said this morning that it was a
really great day if you have good legs, and a terrible day if you have bad
legs. I ended up in the latter category. It was a very terrible day.”
The Dane, who came into the Tour
off a big spring win beating Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel at Amstel Gold Race, had
hopes of being in the mix. Early in the stage, he made an effort to go with the
break.
“I tried to join the breakaway
from the start. I actually thought the UAE would keep it pretty tight, so I
only tried once and then I gave up.”
But with his legs fading, even
that option didn’t seem likely to work out for him, “In the end I don't think it would
have changed anything. With these legs, it wasn't because I had driven in
yellow anyway.”
