The Kigali 2025 World Championships started this Sunday in style. The historic edition in Rwanda, the first on African soil, left indelible images in the elite men's time trial. Remco Evenepoel passedTadej Pogacar on the road to take his third consecutive rainbow jersey. Meanwhile, Ivan Romeo closed his first participation in a race of this caliber.
The Movistar Team rider represented Spain in the World Time Trial along with Raúl García Pierna. Romeo was warning all week that he had prepared in detail the time trial, although the course did not favor him. Even so, he said that if he had the performance he had planned, he could dream of medals.
But, as expected, the still reigning under-23 world time trial champion (for last few hours), was not able to compete with the level of the greatest talents of the discipline. Iván Romeo was outside the Top 10, although he finished 11th. It is not the result that could be expected from someone as good as him, but it is still a good mark for his first performance in an elite World Championship.
After finishing the world championships in Kigali (the first of them, since the mixed team time trial and the road race also await him), Iván Romeo posted a message through his social networks. The Movistar Team rider confirmed that, although that 11th place is a promising result for the future, it is not what he expected for a day like this: "It just wasn't the day. Thank you all for the unconditional support, we will be back," Ivan Romeo briefly stated via his X account.

Spain's results on the first day

In addition to Iván Romeo's 11th place, these were all the results for Spain in both the Men's and Women's World Time Trial:
  • Iván Romeo - World Time Trial Elite Men: 11th position.
  • Raúl García Pierna - World Time Trial Elite Men: 18th position.
  • Mireia Benito - World Time Trial Elite Women: 10th position.
Mireia Benito was 10th in the Women's World Time Trial 2025

Far from the medals, yes, but all 3 showed that there is a lot of room for improvement that is exciting for future editions.
