"It feels a bit like déjà vu" - Jack Haig likely to focus on Vuelta a España again after Tour disaster

Jack Haig was one of the first abandons at the Tour de France. The Autralian climber was eyeing a top spot in the overall classification, but could not go on with that ambition as a crash spilled disaster.

Haig said in a video message from Bahrain - Victorious that "it feels a bit like déjà vu after last year". For the second year in a row the Australian finds himself abandoning the Tour de France in the opening week after a crash that has caused him serious harm. Alongside Primoz Roglic and Caleb Ewan he crashed in a roundabout en route to Arenberg, leading to his abandon whilst leading the team's GC ambitions.

“Unfortunately, it was just bad luck. The team did a good job and made sure I was safe. The stage was almost over, there had been a big selection. I was just in the wrong position, the one next to me fell," he described. "At first I didn't know it was that bad. But I had a lot of scrapes, especially on my back. After assessing myself, I decided I better go to the hospital. There it turned out that I had a broken skipper's bone. And in general I just feel really stocky," Haig said of his injuries.

As the injuries are not serious, chances are Haig will refocus on the Vuelta a España just as he did last year. Having finished third place last year it may have been a blessing in disguise, however at the time being Bahrain - Victorious are having a difficult race - added by the police searches that came before the race.
