Jonas Vingegaard entered the final mountain stage of the Tour de France with over seven minutes of advantage over Tadej Pogacar however all could've still gone downhill. The crash and subsequent time loss of Sepp Kuss was a very vivid reminder of how Jumbo-Visma only has the race won after arriving to the finish line in Paris.
“Of course we never counted on this lead. The lead we took in the time trial was already much bigger than expected and then, on the day of the Col de la Loze, we increased the difference even more," Merijn Zeeman told Wielerflits. "As a result, we were able to view this ride a little more calmly in advance." Vingegaard remained consistent and on the 20th stage of the race he kept up with Tadej Pogacar in his attack on the final climb, not being able to take the stage win but instead to seal his GC run.
Into Paris today there isn't any expected attack on his race lead and traditionally it should be a relaxed stage. Sepp Kuss tumbled out of the Top10 with facial injuries and more road rash, right after the finish Zeeman commented on the American: “I haven't seen him yet. In the race he was still okay, but he was immediately released. He had a very large wound near his eye and in his face. I don't think he had a nice day."
"It could also have been Jonas, then everything would have been killed. That's why it was still quite stressful in the car until the bottom of the last climb. And I won't celebrate until we cross the line tomorrow," he concluded, regarding today's celebration stage into Paris.
