The
Tour de Suisse has finished this Sunday and
Felix Gall rode to a fourth place in the overall classification - missing out on the podium due to the raid on stage 1. However, the Austrian showed his best climbing legs once again, right in time for the
Tour de France where he will once again aim high.
"I didn't feel great at the start of the climb. Looking at the data, it was a little below what we were aiming for. But the split time gave me hope, and I was closing in on Lennard [Kämna] in front of me," the Austrian said in a post-race interview. After Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale put on a very good performance on the Criterium du Dauphiné with Paul Seixas, the team was also at the forefront in Switzerland.
Gall lost important time to a few rivals on stage 1 due to the massive breakaway that had formed, but throughout the week, alongside João Almeida, the 27-year old was the rider who attacked the most and looked to make the difference on every chance he got.
Ultimately this payed off as more and more riders struggled with the continuous hard days, whilst Gall - also fifth at the Tour of the Alps - only seemed to improve. By the end of the week, he finished second on the mountain time-trial, not far from the victory, and moving up the overall classification now above Julian Alaphilippe.
"I gave it my all. It was a really tough stage after an even more demanding week of racing. Apart from the first stage, I'm pretty happy with what we did this week, which is positive for the rest of the season," he concluded. "Now I'm going to take a little rest and prepare for the Tour de France,"
