Tom Pidcock, as always, has been having a very complex season. He let go the Cyclocross World Championships but raced over the winter, then raced the spring classics, had a stint in MTB over May and now prepares for the Tour de France.
"I definitely feel better about that now than, for example, at the beginning of the season, in the time trial in the Algarve. So I'm looking forward to it, I'm curious where I stand exactly," Pidcock said in an interview with In de Leiderstrui ahead of the opening time-trial of the
Tour de Suisse. "I don't think I can win, but I hope for myself that I can just do a good time trial."
Having won Strade Bianche as well as finishing on the podium of Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, it has proven to be a more successful spring than usual. He has not taken a long preparation for the Tour as many of his rivals have, but will see if the work put in has already brought it's effects. “I'm here to see exactly where I stand. I had a good training camp, where I was able to do everything I had to do," he explains. "There is still some room for improvement towards the Tour, so that is something I want to discover in Switzerland."
Here he will have a few hilly stages where he can perform, however with the team focusing on stage wins he'll have opportunities to succeed and a lot of freedom. Over the eight days he hopes to also improve his form ahead of the Grand Depart. "I think it's a nice race to discover where I stand, and I'm mainly talking about the mountains. Last season I got corona in the Tour de Suisse before we went into the mountains, so I also want to see where I stand in that area."
