The time has almost arrived for what is poised to be an epic dual in the Ardennes between Remco Evenepoel and Tadej Pogacar for Monument glory at Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2025. Both have two wins here already on their palmares, with all eyes are on the Olympic champion and the world champion.
Speaking to Sporza ahead of the race this Sunday afternoon, a similar all-star dual was presented to Evenepoel from years gone by - Frank Vandenbroucke and Michele Bartoli in 1999, whose epic battle on La Redoute has gone down in the annals of Liege-Bastogne-Liege history. “Different times," Evenepoel laughs when asked if he and Pogacar will replicate something similar in 2025. “They were still climbing in the big ring back then. We’ll see how it goes.”
Evenepoel admits though, a war between himself and Pogacar of that ilk would more than keep the fans entertained. “Let’s hope so," he adds with a smile. "It would be great to recreate something like that."
Despite the fact that Evenepoel is unbeaten in his two previous appearances at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, it's probably fair to say that most see Pogacar as the favourite, with even Evenepoel himself saying earlier this week: "Tadej is definitely the number one favourite for Sunday. You can put me second on your favourites list, with half a star less than Tadej."
But with that being said, how can the Soudal - Quick-Step leader get the better of the Rainbow Jersey this afternoon? “It’ll be tough, but we’ll give it our all. I’m definitely ready for the fight. I was there in Amstel, and while the finale on Wednesday played out differently, Liège suits me too,” Evenepoel analyses of his chances. “If I want to win, I can’t let Tadej drop me. And if it comes down to a sprint - then so be it,” he concludes defiantly.
