Though he managed to limit the damage, Mas was understandably subdued after the stage. The time lost to rivals in the battle for the top 10 — and potentially the top 5 — was clearly a blow. Still, the overriding positive was that he finished the stage in one piece. Team-mate
Iván Romeo confirmed Mas appeared to be okay after speaking with him at the finish, while the rider himself offered a brief update: "We lost some time, but we came through it. I’ve got a burn that’s stinging a bit — we probably lost around 50 seconds, but we’re still in the race. Once I get a shower, it should ease off."
Looking ahead to the high mountains looming next week, Mas will need to start regaining ground from his current 13th place in the general classification. Encouragingly, he remains confident in his condition: "The sensations are good," he said.
Given how he looked prior to the crash, seeing him finish with under a minute lost came as a relief to Mas and his team. We’ll continue to monitor any updates on his physical condition, but for now, it appears the Movistar leader has lived to fight another day.
