Tom Pidcock crashed yesterday, but looked to perform on the hilltop finish that Tirreno-Adriatico had in store this Thursday afternoon. He ended up having a big effect on the stage winner, but not in his favour as he could not time his attack right.
"We indeed wanted to go for it today. Especially after yesterday's stage. I noticed that I had good legs," Pidcock told Cyclingpro.net in a post-race interview. "That was also the case today, so I wanted to try something. In the final I was well up front, but I had some doubts. Maybe I should have gone after that Uno-X guy right away.”
The hilltop finish could suit the likes of Pidcock, a talented puncheur, but it simply was not hard enough. Before the final false flat finishing straight he had hit the front, but decided to wait. However as no-one picked up the pace and Jonas Abrahamsen's lead in the head of the race grew, Pidcock launched an early sprint to try and surprise. "In the end I thought: why not?, but I ruined it." He was immediately followed by the sprinters that ended up fighting for the stage win, and faded into a 15th spot on the day.
"That was pretty much the story of the day," he tells, his attack having brought back the Norwegian rider, which then saw Jonathan Milan snatch the win. Now in Pidcock's sights are the upcoming two mountain stages: "It's going to be tough. It'll be interesting. I'm looking forward to it and I'm curious to see where I can end up in the general classification."
