Jonas Vingegaard has taken time on Sepp Kuss at the Vuelta a Espana, but hopes his teammate wins the overall classification. All the Jumbo-Visma riders look capable of winning the race, but it is unclear to which the race will fall towards.
“The stage win was our main goal and we also wanted to keep the situation that way, with the three of us at 1-2-3 in the general classification,” Vingegaard told Eurosport after what was an utmost dominant performance on the 17th stage of the race. “That went the way we wanted. We can really be very happy with this. And I'm honestly happy that Sepp is still the leader.”
In the final kilometers of the climb however the situation changed in an unexpected way. Primoz Roglic hit the front of the GC group, in order to force the pace. It was not a sharp attack, but he had the legs to create differences. However he did so for Sepp Kuss who was dropped under the Slovenian's pace, Jonas Vingegaard looked behind but he followed Roglic who was committed to arriving at the finish as fast as possible.
Reactions at the finish were mixed, all three riders have different feelings and words on what is the "ideal" outcome, if there even is one. The Dutch team are set to win the third Grand Tour of the season and fully complete the podium, however they are now themselves battling for the GC win. Vingegaard however concludes with an interesting statement: “Honestly? I hope he keeps the leader's jersey. I really hope that Sepp wins this Vuelta a España.”
