In the final season of his professional career, the last thing Geraint Thomas needed was any crashes or injuries. Although his form hasn't been at the level expected, for the first half of 2025 he was at least safe. Sadly though, on stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse, the former Tour de France winner crashed hard and was ultimately forced to abandon the race.
Given the proximity between the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France, there was some concern that the 2018 Maillot Jaune winner would miss out on a final appearance at the Grand Tour. Now though, via his Watts Occurring podcast, the Welshman has provided an injury update.
"Obviously, I crashed out, didn't I! Not 100% sure how it happened really," begins the 39-year-old. "I banged my knee, which was kind of okay, but my foot got caught behind me almost as well, and I just twisted my knee and my hamstring. I just had a massive dead leg, and the doctors were trying to get me to go into the ambulance."
Thomas however, was determined not to leave the race in the back of an emergency vehicle. "I was just like: 'No, no, no. I just need to ride it out,'" he explains, having soldiered on to finish the stage, before abandoning the race the next morning. "There was a bit of back and forth with that really and then the doctor said: 'We don't want to take the risk. You'll be better just having a few days off to make sure it is 100%, then you can train again and be good for the Tour.' So we did that rather than battle away and maybe make it worse or overcompensate."
As such, there is no real concern that Thomas might be forced to miss the Tour de France in his final season. "I've had a couple of easy day. Been seeing the physio and to be honest, that's the worst bit for me," concludes the INEOS Grenadiers star. "I just hate all that rehab stuff, it just cracks me. I've never been one for that, I've always struggled. I've done it, but as soon as I'm okay again it's back on the bike again for six hours. Boom."
