Lenny Martínez has only recently turned 20 years of age but is already racing at the front of the
Vuelta a Espana. After one mountain stage, the
Groupama - FDJ rider sneaked into the third spot in the overall classification.
"The day went well, I was well helped by the whole team who put me in perfect conditions, then it was done on the pedals at the end," Martínez said in a post-race interview. "I'm happy to finish with the big names. It's the Vuelta all the same, I'm happy with my performance."
Under the radar, the Frenchman was part of the GC group, not attacking the race, but not getting dropped and then sprinting to a spot within the group itself. After a strong performance in the team time-trial, Martínez climbed to third in the CG, only 11 seconds behind Remco Evenepoel. He sits above many of the GC favourites after a strong performance in Arinsal.
"Lenny made a great climb, he smoothed his effort well and managed to accompany the group which is playing for the win," team DS Benoît Vaugrenard said. "It's a good step on his part and it positions him in third place overall. It's a good day for us." It is uncertain how long or if he will be able to keep up these types of performances into Madrid however yesterday's performance was already impressive.
