Oier Lazkano recently won the Clásica Jaén Paraiso Interior and after last year's performances, the Spanish champion has proven himself to be a great rider outside of the tarmac. He impressed today with a stunning rider to a podium spot at
Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne.
"You always want to win but Wout [van Aert] and Tim [Wellens] were super strong and they pushed so hard, I couldn't win," Lazkano said in an interview with Sporza. Lazkano followed the duo and Laurence Pithie with 88 kilometers to go in the winning move, and then had a podium position almost sealed as long as he managed to keep up with the riders ahead of him. He did so and managed to take a result that marks his spring until now.
"It's one of those classics that you always see on television and it's special to race here, a very good day," he admits. However a win was possible. In the final kilometers he waited for his moment - inside the final kilometer - to launch an attack, but at this point of the race the fatigue was quite excessive and he couldn't drop his rivals. Not collaborating with them however was not an option: "If you stop they will stop, they will attack you, it's better to race until the end and then play your cards and that's what I did."
"I had no legs that's it," he admits. Nevertheless Lazkano rides into a third place, and most importantly cements his spot as the rider that Movistar has to protect the most throughout the cobbled classics. Alongside Ivan García Cortina, the two have serious chances of fighting for podiums in some of the other cobbled classics.
