Remco Evenepoel is widely expected to make his
Tour de France debut in 2024. Having already won the Vuelta a Espana and led the
Giro d'Italia before departing the race due to covid earlier this year,
Soudal - Quick-Step boss
Patrick Lefevere is quietly confident.
“On Tuesday, we spoke with Remco for the first time about the Tour," Lefevere tells Het Laatste Nieuws following the presentation of the 2024 Tour de France profiles and routes. "However, he still has unfinished business with the Giro d'Italia. He is even considering combining the Giro and Tour. But with what comes next, the Olympic Games for example, that doesn't seem like the best idea to me.”
With the likes of two-time, back-to-back Maillot Jaune winner Jonas Vingegaard, another two-time Tour de France winner in Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic following his transfer move to BORA - hansgrohe, Evenepoel is likely to be part of a very hotly-contested fight in 2024.
“We have to draw up a balanced program before the Tour. The Giro-Tour combination is not yet one hundred percent ruled out, but it is not recommended," says Lefevere, who concludes with the surest sign yet of Evenepoel's Tour de France involvement. “There is a good chance, yes.”
