Trek-Segafredo's
Giulio Ciccone could be set to target the
Vuelta a Espana alongside his home Grand Tour, the
Giro d'Italia in 2023.
A former three-time stage winner and a former king of the mountains at the Giro d'Italia, Ciccone has enjoyed a fair amount of success in front of his compatriots. With his one and only previous attempt at the Vuelta a Espana ending prematurely after a crash on stage 16 of the 2021 edition of the race, it's understandable Ciccone may feel he has unfinished business in Spain.
Having had a solid if unspectacular 2022, highlighted by a stage win at the Giro and a top 10 finish at Tirreno–Adriatico, the 28-year-old Italian will be looking to improve as he enters the prime years of his career and secure himself in the position of Trek-Segafredo's Grand Tour leader.
Once regarded by many as the heir to Vincenzo Nibali's throne at the top of Italian Grand Tour cycling, Ciccone has only managed a single top 20 finish from his ten previous three-week stage races. With his young teammate Antonio Tiberi showing promise, could Ciccone revive his general classification hopes in 2023?
