Giulio Ciccone has been showing some strong form in 2025 and the Italian star had continued that in the early stages of the
Giro d'Italia too. Sadly though, any dreams the
Lidl-Trek leader might have had of a high placing in the general classification look to have quite literally come crashing down on stage 14.
As the riders sped towards an expected bunch sprint finale, the peloton was navigating some wet and narrow cobbled roads when disaster struck and more than half the bunch were held up by a mass crash. Although many riders were just frustrated to get stuck behind the incident, for Ciccone, things looked much worse with the Italian visibly in pain as he sat at the roadside clutching at his midriff. Although the three-time Giro d'Italia stage winner did bravely get back onto his bike and finish the stage in 168th, more than 16 minutes down, Ciccone's Giro may now be over as he has been sent to hospital for further checks.
"Giulio Ciccone is on his way to hospital for scans," announces a post by the official social media pages of the Lidl-Trek team. "As soon as we have reliable news we will share it here."
This marks a sharp return to earth for Lidl-Trek, who had enjoyed almost nothing but success over the course of the first 13 stages at the 2025 Giro d'Italia, winning five of them (Mads Pedersen - stages 1, 3, 5 + 13,
Daan Hoole - stage 10), but now, with Ciccone out of the GC fight and maybe out of the race altogether, it's the first real disappointment Lidl-Trek have had this Grand Tour.
All involved at CyclingUpToDate send out our best wishes to Ciccone and rest assured we will keep up to date with any further developments and updates posted by Lidl-Trek.
