Sitting in his afvourite pub, sipping a pint of beer, playing darts or snooker with his buddies and occasionally throwing in a podcast... I think we all imagined Geraint Thomas' retiring would look something like that. But now it seems like his love for cycling could prevail and keep him in the sport in the years after his active career.

This week, the best Welsh rider in peloton informed that the 2025 season will be his last among pros after a prolonged period of foreshadowing the news. What is not clear at the moment is whether we will see Thomas in any kind of role within cycling.

The successful relationship between Thomas and INEOS Grenadiers might continue with what seems to be an offer to join the management of the British WorldTeam. "It's just something I'm thinking about and talking about," Thomas told Cyclingnews, "but nothing's concrete at all, so I'm just looking at options."

Thomas broke the news that he could be heading for Ineos management on Daniel Benson's Substack on Friday, but 24 hours later he added that "nothing was guaranteed, but it's an option. At the moment, I'm more concentrated on enjoying my last season on the bike."

The 38-year-old rider took on the role of mentor to the team's youngsters long ago and so the transition into team car or a similar position could be a nice fit. "I feel like I've got a lot to offer, I'd love to stay involved in the sport, this team," he told Cyclingnews. "I feel like a big part of that as well, so I want to help to see it continue to move forward again and get back to the top."

But before Geraint Thomas decides what he wants to do next, there's still a plenty of nice races to ride, including a likely Grand Tour participation. Of course he won't be there "just for the sake of participating". "I've got plenty of progression to make," he said. "But I've got four weeks after this to really knuckle down and get some good work done."

First they gotta hire proper leaders. No matter of management can turn what they have into Pogi, Jonas, MVDP, WVA

Might have to find a new sponsor too, not sure Radcliffe won’t pull the plug on the whole thing, like he did with sailing and might be in the process of doing with rugby. And the day oil money finds new ways or places to buy reputations, a lot of athletes are going to freak out

Yet more false info from this inept poster, INEOS have NOT pulled the plug on the sailing team and will sponsor the 38th "Americas Cup" with Brittannia......

Oh, so for YOU, if Ratcliffe would tell the Ineos cycling team he’d stop sponsorship and start a rival team with new riders that would not constitute pulling out of your initial commitments or contracts? Ainsley has a better chance of winning legally than WVA. INEOS Britannia and Sir Ben Ainslie part ways (very diplomatic way they put this considering what he says below) for the 38th America's Cup. "The British Challenger for the 38th America's Cup, led by Sir Ben Ainslie, was astounded to read today’s statement from INEOS and Mercedes F1 regarding their planned challenge for the 38th America’s Cup. This plan raises significant legal and practical obstacles for them that will play out in the coming days and weeks."
