Geraint Thomas has not had an easy start to 2022, however at the
Tour de Suisse things seem to be finally clicking for the Briton, who is now a big candidate to take one of the eight spots in
INEOS Grenadiers'
Tour de France selection.
“I don’t think that the result will necessarily be why I make the team or not. But if you’re going well and showing good form then it’s always good for my own confidence," Thomas told VeloNews at the Tour de Suisse. At the end of stage four Thomas is sitting third in the overall classification, after being able to promptly respond to the moves on stage one alongside Adam Yates, and having taken three bonus seconds on stage three which put him as the best placed rider out of the candidates for overall win.
Thomas struggled with form during the first half of the season, having only fourth places in the initial time-trials at Itzulia Basque Country and Tour de Romandie to show. He played a domestique role for his teammates in the process, however is finally showing strong form just in time for the Tour. Having won the race in 2018, aswell as having completed the race a total of ten times, not only his climbing prowess but also his experience will be crucial for the team over the three weeks.
"The team, and with my role, I’ll be able to fit in there. All being well I hope to be in the team, it’s just about what I actually have to do within that really," he concluded. Whilst the lead is set out to be shared between Daniel Martínez and Adam Yates, Thomas can also ride himself into a strong place in the general classification, in which his time-trialing abilities are likely to see him already near the front on the opening day.
