Stage 17 of the
Vuelta a Espana had a very difficult finale at the summit of the Alto de El Morredero, however, the brutal gradients of the penultimate summit finish didn't create the differences that were expected. We take a look at the classifications after what was another difficult day on the bike for the peloton, in the eve of an important time-trial.
Vingegaard and Almeida were both out of the bonifications at the finish line, but the Dane won 2 seconds on the road which see him grow the race lead up to 50 seconds.
Tom Pidcock remains in third place, unexpectedly putting a few seconds on Jai Hindley both on the road and in bonifications, extending his lead to a more manageable 36 seconds.
Hindley follows in fourth place, 3:04 minutes behind the red jersey whilst Giulio Pellizzari, teammate of the Australian, was the man who benefited the most out of today, winning the stage and collecting important time on the overall classification. He is now within 47 seconds of Hindley and can be an important asset to attack Tom Pidcock's podium place.
Felix Gall, who struggled once again, shed some time and is now 4:57 minutes away from the lead, only 2 seconds ahead of Matthew Riccitello who continues to impress, but simultaneously continues to be at risk of being cast out of the race as he is in the colours of Israel - Premier Tech. Torstein Traeen is ninth whilst Matteo Jorgenson overtook William Junior Lecerf to re-enter the Top10. Egan Bernal lost a lot of time and has exited the fight for the Top10 once again.
