Stage 4 of the
Tour Down Under was originally meant to see the riders go up the Old Willunga Hill on three occasions, but this was ultimately not the case after the extreme fire warning. It was a day for the sprinters, but nevertheless it became a stage that saw many changes in the overall standings, mostly due to crashes.
The main news of the day were that of
Jhonatan Narváez' withdrawal from the race, sustaining vertebrae fractures after coming down early in the day. He was second in the overall classification and could potentially achieve more if he was to be chasing bonus seconds. His absence means that everyone in the Top10 would automatically gain a position, and changes the format of the podium as Mauro Schmid - who captured 2 bonus seconds today - is now second, and Harry Sweeny has jumped into third position.
Former ninth place
Adam Yates also lost time, seemingly suffering from the crash on the previous stage which now sees him fall out of the top10; whilst Luke Plapp also purposefully lost time after taking a risk and entering the day's breakaway.
The Top10 is now completed by Marco Brenner, Andreas Kron, Andrea Raccagni, Michael Leonard, Anthon Charmig, Filippo Zana ad Matteo Sobrero.
Raccagni the new white jersey
One rider specially benefitted from today, Soudal - Quick-Step's Andrea Raccagni, who not only gained the position of Narváez in the Top10, but also that of Michael Leonard as he went on to grab 3 bonus seconds in one of the intermediate sprints. What this means however is that he is the new leader of the youth classification, as he was previously tied in time with Leonard.
Sam Welsford did not have the legs to contest today's sprint and Tobias Lund Andresen finished second on the day, virtually confirming his win in the points classification; Whilst the same can be said of Martin Urianstad's KOM jersey.
Lund Andresen only has to finish the race in order to win the points classification now
