With the end of the year 2025 today, another set of riders are officially announcing their retirement from pro cycling. Miles Scotson of Arkéa - B&B Hotels, one of Australia's best riders from the current generation, is hanging up his wheels after spending nine years racing at World Tour level.
"Closing out 2025. And also closing a big chapter of my life, professional cycling," he said in a post shared on Instagram. "Fulfilled my dream to turn professional and make a career from riding my bike and it’s taken me around the world and given me so many different experiences. It definitely has also been a roller coaster of ups and downs and I thank everyone who supported me along the way and those who believed in me and helped create the pathway".
Scotson turned pro in 2017, after several years delivering strong results in the youth ranks that saw him as a very valuable under-23 rider. In his very first road race as an elite pro rider, he conquered perhaps the biggest victory of his career, achieving straight away the Australian national title on the road, in a year he represented BMC. His only other pro win came at the opening stage of the 2021 Volta a Comunitat Valenciana, where from the breakaway, he worked his way into a solo win.
Scotson, now 31, joined Groupama - FDJ in 2019 after the demise of BMC and in the French team, he continued to have space to perform in the time trials, but mostly grew in his role of a leadout man. A quality rouleur, he was always a rider known to spend time in the wind, either chasing breakaways, or above all, helping Arnaud Démare in his pursuit of victories in the sprints. In 2024, Scotson followed Démare into Arkéa - B&B Hotels where he raced for the last two years of his career. He raced all Grand Tours in his career, notably being part in the 2021 Tour de France; and also raced on 12 occasions in the monuments, where he was a valuable asset mainly in the spring classics.
