Arnaud De Lie has so far been a shadow of himself this season. Despite a very strong performance at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad he was only 10th, but he has had several DNF's and he now abandons Paris-Nice as well.
"After consultation with the team’s management and performance department, it was decided that Arnaud De Lie will not take the start anymore in the fourth stage of Paris-Nice," the team shared on social media. This is because of his crash at Le Samyn, which in itself was quite a shock to the system with a very vivid reaction at the time.
"After crashing in Le Samyn last Tuesday, Arnaud isn’t feeling 100% yet and with the spring classics in mind it’s not favourable to let him continue during the next hard stages. He will be returning home, to prepare and set a new focus on next races in the near future."
Despite the incident which took place last week, the team found it the right choice to have the Belgian start the French stage-race, but on the opening day it was clear he was not at his best as he failed to keep up with the peloton on some hilltops, a day that suited him quite well. In stage 2 he did not try to contest the bunch sprint, and after completing the team time-trial the team decided it was best for De Lie to head home and recover. With Milano-Sanremo and several cobbled classics in his schedule, this poses a threat of wrecking his spring campaign.
