He was touted as one of the pre-race favourites and for good reason. After his success in the Mediterranean, Fabio Jakobsen has translated his good run of form into Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne where he capitalized on the peloton's work to take the win with an early yet unbeatable sprint.
“The entire race was intense, and especially the last hour was fast and furious. But I was confident in my sprint and that’s why I launched at 300 meters to go and dove into their slipstream. Then it was all the way to the line," Jakobsen said regarding his performance today.
As expected the Dutchman struggled in the race's tough section of Bergs which saw attacks from the likes of Tom Pidcock and Tiesj Benoot, but Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl knew all too well that the key to this win would be to unite in a strong peloton with other teams that had interests in a sprint and work together for this goal. The chase was successful at the very last second as the peloton only caught the surviving trio of Narváez, van der Hoorn and Laporte with around 100 meters to the finish line with Jakobsen himself closing the gap and sprinting into an impressive win.
"Winning is never easy, but we always aim for it and give our best in order to achieve the victory at the end of the day. Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne is a race that every sprinter wants to have in the palmares and I am happy I did it today together with the Wolfpack," he added.
The Dutchman is now eyeing Le Samyn and Paris-Nice next, two races that will be complicated however by no means impossible for Jakobsen to extend the successful start to the season he has been having.
