Fabio Jakobsen has won Kuurne - Brussels - Kuurne 2022. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team once again took the win with a strong collective performance, as the Dutch was first at the finish in the streets of Kuurne after an entertaining 195 kilometers where only in the final meters was an escapee group caught.
The day's breakaway consisted of Bas Tietema and Arjen Livyns (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB), Luke Durbridge (Team BikeExchange - Jayco), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux), Lluís Mas (Movistar Team), Jules Hesters (Sport Vlaanderen - Baloise) and Wessel Krul (Human Powered Health). With the decisive part of the race to finish with 60 kilometers to go, it was evident that riders from this group could be very important later in the race.
Sure enough action kicked off in the peloton as several riders launched moves over the final bergs in order to break up the peloton. In the Côte du Trieu with 62 kilometers to go, as expected more attacks emerged with Tiesj Benoot heading, causing a group of 17 riders to stay ahead of the peloton, with some breakaway survivors included. Despite the best efforts of Israel - Premier Tech and Alpecin-Fenix mainly, the gap was not coming down from approximately 30 seconds, but as the kilometers passed the peloton gained more numbers and the organization in the front group also lost some impetus.
With 18 kilometers a trio cleared away from the lead group with Jhonatan Narváez, Taco van der Hoorn and Cristophe Laporte. Although not looking like a decisive move, as the kilometers passed the peloton failed to cut their lead and they became a true headache as the sprinter teams burned their remaining matches to reel the group back in. Trek-Segafredo's leadout was the nail in the coffin for the trio as they were caught only in the final 100 meters by Fabio Jakobsen who stormed through to take his fifth win of the season with another dominant sprint.
Jakobsen beat Caleb Ewan and Hugo Hofstetter at the line.
