Geraint Thomas is a British cyclist, born May 25, 1986 in Cardiff, Wales. He grew up in an athletic family and began cycling at a young age. Thomas is married to his wife Sara, and together they have one son.

Thomas rides for the team INEOS Grenadiers (formerly Team Sky), where he has played an important role for many years. He is best known for his versatility as a rider, with big wins in both classics and grand tours, including his 2018 Tour de France victory. His salary is estimated at around €3 million a year, making him one of the highest paid riders in the peloton. In addition to his professional successes, Thomas is also known for his strong time trial skills and his role as a mentor within his team, where he supports younger riders with his experience and knowledge.

One of the most versatile and respected riders of his generation, Thomas began his career in 2007 when he debuted with team Barloworld. Although his early years were mostly about gaining experience, he soon laid the foundation for an impressive career in both track and road cycling.

In 2008 , Thomas transferred to Team Sky, where he quickly established himself as a strong all-rounder. His career received an important boost with the gold medal in the team pursuit at the Beijing Olympics. In the following years, his performance on the track continued to impress, while he increasingly focused on road races.

He continued to focus on track cycling in 2009 , once again achieving success in the team pursuit, both at world championships and in other track races. In road races he also began to impress more and more, especially in smaller races.

2010 marked a turning point in Thomas' career when he finished second overall in the Critérium du Dauphiné and wore the yellow jersey for several days in the Tour de France. This year laid the foundation for his reputation as a versatile rider who could excel in both one-day classics and stage races. The following years saw Thomas grow his role within Team Sky, where he played a key role as a master servant for riders such as Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome during their successful Tour de France campaigns.

2011 saw Thomas' breakthrough in the classics, with a strong fifth-place finish in Gent-Wevelgem and impressive performances in the Tour of Flanders. He showed his versatility by being successful in both one-day classics and stage races.

Geraint Thomas played a crucial role in Team Sky's 2012 squad, helping Bradley Wiggins to victory in the Tour de France. He himself did not compete in the Tour that year, but he again won gold in the team pursuit at the London Olympics. Thomas continued his role as a master mechanic for Team Sky in 2013, being a key mainstay at the Tour de France. He also proved himself a strong stage rider by consistently performing in multiple stage races.

In 2014 , Thomas achieved his first major individual success on the road with a win in the Tour of Algarve. The following year, he confirmed his class with victories in the E3 Harelbeke and strong performances in Paris-Nice. He was increasingly seen as one of the most versatile riders in the peloton, someone who could hold his own in both the classics and the high mountains.

Thomas experienced a strong season in 2015 with victories in the E3 Harelbeke and an impressive performance in Paris-Nice, where he finished fourth. He again played an important role in the Tour de France and proved to be one of the most versatile riders in the peloton. 2016, this year saw Thomas take on a bigger role in stage race standings. He won Paris-Nice, which was his biggest win to that point. He also helped Team Sky to another Tour de France victory with Chris Froo.

Thomas won the Tour of the Algarve in 2017 and wore yellow in the Tour de France after the prologue, but his Tour was ended prematurely by a crash. He also won the Tour of the Alps, further cementing his status as a classification rider.

2018 was the absolute highlight of Thomas' career. After winning the Critérium du Dauphiné, the biggest victory of his life followed: he won the Tour de France, making history as the first Welshman to accomplish this. This success permanently established his name as one of the top climbers and classification riders of his generation.

In the following years, Thomas continued to perform at a high level. In 2019 , he defended his Tour title and finished second, confirming his status as one of the best riders in grand tours. Although he suffered injuries and setbacks in 2020, such as his fall at the Giro d'Italia, he remained resilient and motivated to return to the top level.

2021 and 2022 marked a successful comeback for Thomas, in which he won the Tour de Romandie and placed third in the 2022 Tour de France. Even later in life, he continued to compete with the world's top riders, underscoring his impressive consistency and perseverance.

In 2023 , Thomas set his sights on the Giro d'Italia, where he put in a strong performance and finished second. This reaffirmed his status as one of the most reliable and experienced riders in the peloton. In 2024, although he was less prominent in the grand tours, Thomas remained active and focused on smaller stage races. He also took on a mentoring role within his team, where he shared his experience and knowledge with younger riders.

Geraint Thomas' career is a story of constant evolution, in which he developed from a track rider to one of the most respected and versatile road cyclists of his time. His ability to continue to perform at the highest level, even after many years in the peloton, makes him a true legend in cycling.

In 2024 Thomas had a slow start to the season and decided to follow the same build-up towards the Giro. After a modest Volta a Catalunya and Tour of the Alps, he again showed himself at a high level at the Giro d'italia. He rode second place in the overall classification right on the second day at the Santuario di Oropa behind Tadej Pogacar. He then remained there, losing his second place but hanging on to third into Rome behind Pogacar and Daniel Martínez. He then, for the first time, rode the Tour de France right after - for the first time completing the two in the same year.
