The Norwegian neo-pro took the win in the race's queen stage but Benjamin Thomas holds on to the red jersey.
Tony Gallopin (Trek-Segafredo), Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM), Joel Suter (UAE - Team Emirates), Samuel Leroux (Go Sport - Roubaix Lille Métropole), Flavien Maurelet (St Michel - Auber93), Emmanuel Morin (Team U Nantes Atlantique), Georg Zimmerman (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux) and Antoine Raugel (AG2R Citroën Team) formed the day's escapee group. The last survivors got caught with 6 kilometers to go as the teams looked to setup their leaders towards the final climb.
INEOS made the bottom of the climb harder as youngster Magnus Sheffield hit the front, but soon enough the pace calmed slightly. Cofidis took the helm of the peloton but race leader didn't have the legs to counter-attack when Alpecin's Jay Vine made the winning move.
He resisted though and finished 11th just behind Alberto Bettiol, keeping his lead by a small margin. Stage winner Tobias Johannessen was close to taking enough time but is now 8 seconds away from the lead.
Johannessen counter-attacked Vine and outsprinted him on the line, Antonio Tiberi and Clément Champoussin jumped across from behind and also managed to finish in the front group.
