In brutal conditions on Stage 3 of the Giro d’Abruzzo,
Edison Alejandro Callejas Santos delivered the biggest win of his career with a
sensational solo attack on the final climb. The Petrolike rider defied the cold
and rain to take a memorable victory on the queen stage of the race.
Callejas crossed the line ahead of
Georg Zimmermann
(Intermarché – Wanty) and David De la Cruz (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), sealing a
hard-fought triumph in the heart of the Apennines.
Pablo Torres was behind, but
struggled in the final stages of the climb.
Speaking after the stage, the Colombian was full of
confidence and gratitude toward his team, “We prepared this race very well as a
team and I knew I was in good shape,” Callejas said.
“This stage really suited my characteristics. I felt strong
right from the start of the climb and I noticed that the general classification
contenders were cautious, so I pulled ahead.”
His bold move was rewarded with a career-defining win and
optimism for what lies ahead, having shown himself to the world today.
“I had very good legs. I really believe this is the start of something big with
our partner Petrolike, which is building the future with promising young
talent.”
