Jonas Vingegaard was crowned Velo d'Or winner for 2023 last week. The Tour de France winner was indeed very successful during the most recent campaign however only 8 of the 36 jury members chose him as winner, compared to 16 that voted for Mathieu van der Poel. So how did the Jumbo-Visma leader take victory?
With Vélo Magazine having now shared the voting choices of all the various journalists who take part in the process. It has been revealed that Alpecin-Deceuninck's Dutch superstar had 16 people vote him as the rider of the year. Tadej Pogacar had 11 votes, Vingegaard 8 with Remco Evenepoel taking the remaining 1.
The important thing to note though, is that each journalist is allowed to vote for a top-5, with points descending the lower down the list a rider is placed. When the overall points were calculated, Vingegaard, who was the only rider to be on every single list, managed to rake an impressive total of 142 points.
Van der Poel however, who five journalists deemed to have not had a season worthy enough of a top-5 placing, only managed a total of 133 with Pogacar in third with a tally of 126.
