Dominant Demi Vollering targeting sixth straight Itzulia Women stage win: "We have to stay safe first and get into the final. Then we'll see”

The seemingly unstoppable Demi Vollering continued her utter dominance of the Itzulia Women's race early today, taking her fifth-straight stage win and putting herself in pole position for a second consecutive overall victory.

“This was not the plan. The intention was that Marlen Reusser attacked on the last climb of the day and could stay away like that,” says the Team SD Worx leader following her stage 2 victory. “In the end that didn't work out, partly because the roads were so slippery. It was tricky. After that I was in a good position for the sprint and Reusser did a good lead-out.”

Now 56 seconds ahead of her teammate Reusser who sits in second overall, Vollering has a lead of 1:05 over the nearest of her rivals, Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Canyon//SRAM Racing. “The finish suited me really well,” Vollering admits. “In the last ten kilometers, it started to rain. Then you felt very quickly that it became slippery. I almost fell to the ground twice in the final.”

"That is beautiful. Tomorrow I might win more," she continues, eluding to the potential of a historic sixth-straight Itzulia Women stage win. "No, tomorrow will be hard again. We have to stay safe first and get into the final. Then we'll see.”
