INEOS Grenadiers and NSN took early responsibility for the chase, clearly signalling their intention to keep the stage together for a sprint finish, and the gap never grew to a dangerous margin. Although the break was given a little more space midway through the stage, the outcome rarely looked in doubt and the move was reeled in inside the final 25 kilometres.
The race changed character dramatically inside the final ten kilometres when UAE Team Emirates – XRG moved to the front and raised the pace sharply. Ivo Oliveira and Marc Soler drove hard at the head of the peloton, immediately putting riders under pressure and causing splits in the bunch.
The acceleration caught several riders out, including Giulio Ciccone and Tao Geoghegan Hart, and for a moment the stage looked set to be decided by a reduced group rather than a full peloton sprint. With UAE dictating the tempo and favourites such as Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel well placed near the front, the finale turned into a fight for position at high speed.
The descent towards Sant Feliu de Guíxols allowed many of the dropped riders to regain contact, however, and the peloton came back together in the closing kilometres, reopening the possibility of a sprint finish.
Bahrain Victorious tried to take advantage of the hesitation with a late move from Santiago Buitrago and Lenny Martinez, but the attack was quickly neutralised, setting up a fast and technical run-in to the line.
Positioning proved decisive in the final kilometre. Tom Pidcock opened the sprint from distance, forcing an early reaction, before Evenepoel accelerated past him in the closing metres.
Godon, however, timed his effort perfectly, coming alongside in the final metres to take the victory on the line in a tight photo finish, with Evenepoel second and Pidcock holding on for third after a demanding and unpredictable opening stage.
The 105th edition of the Volta a Catalunya started today with a start list full of big names, so it is fair to expect a highly competitive race. Remco Evenepoel showed that despite the difficulties he had leaving Teide, which almost made him miss the race, he is in good condition. The way he fought for the victory today until the very last metre, together with Dorian Godon, was a clear statement of intent for this Volta a Catalunya.
Jonas Vingegaard and Team Visma | Lease a Bike were, as expected, rather discreet during the stage, although the Danish rider took advantage of an acceleration by Bahrain Victorious to start the final descent at the front of the peloton, with Remco on his wheel.
Tom Pidcock had a finish today that suited him perfectly, especially after his fantastic performance at Milano–Sanremo, and he was the first to launch the sprint. But today was simply not going to be his day.
UAE Team Emirates - XRG, lead by João Almeida, who is returning to competition after the Volta ao Algarve, increased the pace in the final third of the stage, but it did not go beyond that. We will need to wait a few more days to see how the Portuguese rider’s legs really are, as he is building up towards the Giro d’Italia.
INEOS Grenadiers, together with Movistar and Bahrain, took responsibility for the chase behind the breakaway during the stage. They worked, cooperated, and controlled the race, but in the end they had nothing to show for their effort.
Overall, not as damaging of a day as it was last year. Up and down, very explosive, but in the end more conservative too.
There were no gaps in the sprint, and the only riders losing time which I didn't expect were Giulio Ciccone and above all Derek Gee Lidl-Trek have hence lost their GC depth and are down to only Mattias Skjelmose.
The fight for the stage win didn't see much, a few teams used their last domestiques as leadout but all of them too early, and so Evenepoel and Pidcock were the strongest as expected... Only there was 1 more rider in the mix, a Dorian Godon in peak form who really showed his absolute best level to take a classy win.
GC wise the seconds Evenepoel and Pidcock won are unlikely to have an effect by the end of the race, but who knows if Evenepoel gets to the leader's jersey instead of Vingegaard first because of this and Evenepoel actually has good level in the mountains, then it can change some tactics.
The first stage of the Volta a Catalunya 2026 largely matched what its route suggested: an opening day without major differences in the general classification, but with enough difficulty to prevent a conventional bunch sprint.
The course, starting and finishing in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and covering more than 170 kilometers, included climbs such as the Alt de la Romanyà and the Alt de Sant Hilari, as well as a slightly uphill finish, which favored riders with explosive capabilities rather than pure sprinters.
In terms of how it unfolded, the stage maintained a relatively controlled dynamic. There were attempts at breakaways during the day, but the peloton managed the gaps without excessive disruption, allowing the outcome to be decided in the final kilometers.
In that decisive stretch, a tactical battle could be observed among several teams to position their leaders, something typical in this kind of opening stage where no one wants to lose time from the very first day.The reduced sprint finish confirmed that script.
The victory went to Dorian Godon, who edged out Remco Evenepoel by a minimal margin, with Tom Pidcock also among the top positions. The finish was tight enough to require a very precise resolution, reflecting the parity among riders in this type of finale.
From a general point of view, the stage can be considered a coherent start within a race of this level. It did not create significant gaps among the main contenders, but it did allow a glimpse of the form of some important names and how teams approach the race from day one.
Moreover, the fact that the initial lead falls to a fast yet resilient rider fits the profile of the stage, which combined wear and explosiveness without becoming decisive for the final classification.
