Concussion, broken collarbone and scapula for Rui Costa at Volta ao Algarve crash

The worst news feared for EF Education-EasyPost's Rui Costa have been confirmed. Following his crash at the Volta ao Algarve, the Portuguese rider has been diagnosed with several fractures.

The spring is at risk for the veteran who this year signed for the American team. Costa crashed yesterday during stage 3 of the Algarve alongside teammate Marijn van den Berg in what seemed to be a calm piece of road. The violent crash left him with fractures to the collarbone and scapula, alongside a concussion.

"Rui Costa and Marijn van den Berg were involved in a crash on stage 3 of the Volta ao Algarve . Costa abandoned and was taken to hospital for further examination, which confirmed fractures of the right scapula and clavicle. He was also diagnosed with a concussion;" the team shared on social media.

Marijn van den Berg continued the race and concluded the stage, however far from the peloton where he was a contender for the stage win. "Van den Berg was initially cleared to continue by race medical staff and the team. After several more assessments over the following 10 minutes, the team removed van den Berg due to concussion-like symptoms," the team revealed. "He is now in the team’s internal concussion protocol and will return to light training when cleared. We wish them both safe and swift recoveries."
