Close but no cigar for INEOS Grenadiers at Dauphiné

INEOS Grenadiers came into the Critérium du Dauphiné with the priority in stage wins, and today's opening course favoured Ethan Hayter for the stage win, however the Briton came home second.

This was was despite a lot of work from INEOS Grenadiers. The British team decided to help control the breakaway on the day, and also impose a rhythm that would drop and keep the likes of Dylan Groenewegen and Phil Bauhaus away from the decisive bunch sprint that would end up deciding the stage.

The team fully commited to Ethan Hayter who found himself in the ideal position for the sprint, having benefited from the only proper leadout in the final kilometers by Filippo Ganna and Michal Kwiatkowski. Hayter went on to finish second, only beat by Wout van Aert, but will have more opportunities over the coming days to emerge victorious - including stage three into Sancy.

Ganna's 11-second loss also indicates that he is unlikely to be focusing on a yellow jersey stint, which would be possible after the race's individual time-trial on stage four.
