Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team will take to the start of stage seven of the
Giro d'Italia with a rider less as
Michael Morkov has abandoned due to a developing illness, leaving
Mark Cavendish with a rider less in support for the upcoming mountains but also a crucial piece in the team's leadout train.
The team announced on social media this morning that Morkov was advised to abandon the race by the team's medical staff, after developing a fever overnight. The 37-year old has already performed at his best level during the race, delivering Mark Cavendish to the win in Balatonfüred on stage three, and was also instrumental in yesterday's sprint where the Manxman finished third.
Morkov's abandon comes premature, but it is expected that Cavendish will also leave the race in the coming week as the mountains draw near. Davide Ballerini and Bert van Lerberghe will now be the last men to help the veteran in the upcoming sprints, a strong leadout however a blow to the team's ambitions.
