Caleb Ewan travels to his homeland this year looking to pick up his 10th career stage win at the Tour Down Under. This year however, he won't be donning the colours of his team Lotto-Dsnty. Instead, Ewan will ride for the Australian national team.
In a report by Het Laatste Nieuws it is said that Lotto duo Ewan and Jarrad Drizners will ride the Australian national championships held in Ballerat before riding the Tour Down Under with the national team. Traditionally, the AusCycling team is full of promising domestic riders with some professional riders who ride for squads that aren't racing in Australia.
Recently relegated Lotto-Dstny have opted not to take part in the 2023 edition of the Tour Down Under, with the team instead opting to kick off their season in France at Grand Prix Cycliste Marseille. “A conscious choice [was made] to have as many riders and staff as possible present at our first stage in January,” a team member said.
With the Tour Down Under not being held since 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic and after Ewan was reportedly heartbroken to miss out on selection for the Australian team at this year's World Championships in Wollongong, this marks a chance at redemption for the rider in front of a home crowd.
