Burgos BH signs young Guatemalan talent Sergio Chumil

Guatemalan cyclist Sergio Chumil is set for an exciting step in his cycling career, becoming the first rider from his country in a generation to make it to the professional ranks in Europe. The talented 22-year-old climber has signed a two-season contract with the Burgos BH team, cementing his rise to the highest level of world cycling.
Sergio Chumil's career is a story of dedication and self-improvement. He began his career in mountain biking, but quickly demonstrated his potential in road cycling. In 2022, he arrived in Spain to compete with Team Cortizo, and since then he has been reaping important victories and outstanding performances.
Among his most outstanding achievements are second place in the Spanish Cup in Vigo and fifth place in the Volta a Portugal de Futuro. In 2023, he returned to Guatemala to participate in local competitions, where he won three stages and took the overall title in the Vuelta al Altiplano Marquense, as well as fourth place in the Vuelta a Bantrab, a UCI 2.2 category race.
Back in Spain, Sergio continued his winning streak, taking the victory in the Spanish Cup in Vigo and the second stage of the Vuelta a Navarra. His most recent achievement was winning the overall of the Vuelta a Zamora, adding another victory to his impressive list of victories.
Burgos BH, the Spanish professional cycling team, has seen the potential of Sergio Chumil and has not hesitated to sign him for the next two seasons. This agreement is the fourth benefit of the agreement signed between Burgos BH and Team Cortizo, a joint project that has provided opportunities for promising young cyclists such as David Delgado, Sinuhé Fernández and Eric Fagúndez.
For Sergio, becoming a professional cyclist in Europe is a dream come true and a historic milestone for Guatemala. The young climber was excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Burgos BH, where he will share the team with teammate Eric Fagúndez, who also trained with Team Cortizo.
"It's great news for my country and for my family, who have always been with me and will be very happy. In Burgos BH I will be reunited with Eric Fagúndez, who also trained in Team Cortizo. I had the opportunity to ride with him last year and he was a great teammate," said Sergio.
