Earlier this week, it was confirmed that French time trial
champion
Bruno Armirail will join
Team Visma | Lease a Bike from Decathlon AG2R
La Mondiale Team for the 2026 season. His transfer is part of a broader wave of
movement between the two teams, with Olav Kooij and Tiesj Benoot heading in the
opposite direction. To better understand what Armirail brings to Visma, Wielerflits
spoke with L’Équipe journalist Pierre Mejot, who has followed the 31-year-old
closely.
“People from our region are usually a bit quieter. We're
more of a wait-and-see type rather than a talker. Bruno isn't a natural
leader,” Mejot explained.
That quiet personality, he believes, makes Armirail ideally
suited to the supporting role Visma will expect him to play. “For Visma | Lease
a Bike, he's the perfect teammate. He can do almost anything and you can use
him on all terrains, in any type of race. That was also the case with
Groupama-FDJ in the past: in the mountains and on flat stages to better
position his leaders. He also has the qualities to make the early breakaway.
He's proven that several times this year, including wearing the pink jersey in
the Giro d'Italia.”
Armirail is not just known for his consistency but also for
his understated personality, sometimes in unintentionally comic ways. Mejot
shared one example from July. “On the first rest day in the recent Tour de
France, he was having a cappuccino during a coffee ride. They'd written ‘enjoy’
on it with chocolate. Bruno: ‘Enjoy? What does that mean? What does that little
fish have to do with this?’ No, that's a completely different story, dear
Bruno. So his English isn't great, haha!”
While laughter follows him off the bike, his recent
performances show a rider still improving. “I expect he can still compete at
the top level for another three or four years. He's also starting to ride
better and better in recent seasons. You can see that Decathlon AG2R La
Mondiale has given him a lot of confidence. Armirail now helps shape
strategies, helping a lot of people. In the Dauphiné, he was always the last
man in line for Paul Seixas, our great talent. Armirail always gave him a lot
of advice.”
