Great Britain has it's future assured in the women's field with certainty as 18-year old
Cat Ferguson has shown all her potential in the Zurich
World Championships. Atfer winning the time-trial event, she has also taken the victory in the road race.
The 73.5-kilometer long race featured two laps of the hilly circuit in Zurich with rain in the mix, making the descents more difficult, on top already of the draining climbs. The young field of racers moved fast through the flat start with a four-rider group making the breakaway of the day, but when the race arrived at the circuit it quickly began to split.
The group was caught with 47 kilometers to go and shortly after an eight-rider group went up the road and was in position to fight for the world title. This included several of the main favourites. There were big attacks but ultimately it came back together before the final lap.
But then the race broke up again. The strong pace up the Wittigem climb saw time-trial winner and runner-up Cat Ferguson and Viktória Chladonová; alongside Spaniard
Paula Ostiz carve a gap to the rest. The trio collaborated well and had the medals all for themselves, but had a rainbow jersey to fight for in the final sprint.
A very long game of cat-and-mouse followed in the final kilometer, eventually culminating in Paula Ostiz launching her sprint first. But there was no match when Ferguson launched her sprint, and the Briton took her second victory of the week. Ostiz was second whilst Chladonová rode to the bronze medal.
