Cat Ferguson the new women's junior star: "Last year I came second and that really hurt. To win now is really unbelievable"

Great Britain has won both titles in the women's junior World Championships. Cat Ferguson has put on a masterful ride to conquer the second of two World titles in Zurich this week; emerging victorious from a rainy and tough race this morning in the road race.

“I am really overjoyed. I always wanted to become world champion on the road. Last year I came second and that really hurt. To win now is really unbelievable," she admits in a post-race interview. Ferguson was already a big pre-race favourite after a dominant win in the time-trial, and proved her worth once again by forging clear in a three-rider group that was the strongest over the day's climbs.

It came down to a three-up sprint ultimate, between her, Paula Ostiz and Viktória Chladnonová. “I didn’t know exactly how big our lead was on the first chasers. I knew we had about a minute with five kilometres to go. We were just riding so slowly… I suddenly saw Megan [Arens] looming up and then I thought: I should just sprint myself."

But she waited, and in the final sprint the Briton was by far the fastest. "I didn’t want to take any more risks and it worked out well. I knew I was the fastest. I had confidence in my sprint," she admitted. “I am really happy and also grateful to my teammates. They really helped me. It is not only my victory, but also a victory for the team.”
