UCI Rankings Rider Update | Tadej Pogacar remains in the lead, small changes in the Top10

The newest UCI Rankings update features only small changes - the biggest of which actually points lost from 12 months ago. But at the lead remains a very solid Tadej Pogacar, who currently has over double the points as Remco Evenepoel.
You can check the previous update. Remco Evenepoel won the time-trial World Championships but his points remain the same as this is what he had already previously achieved. It does not seem like the rankings featured the new incoming points. At the Tour de Luxembourg Antonio Tiberi won the overall classification climbed from 47th to 36th; Third spot David Gaudu climbed 13 spots to 64th... Mathieu van der Poel was second but actually lost points that he had scored last year.
Tadej Pogacar remains in the lead of the rankings followed by Evenepoel; both Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel lost points from 2023 but are third and fourth nonetheless. Primoz Roglic, Wout van Aert, Jonas Vingegaard, Marc Hirschi, Ben O'Connor and Mads Pedersen complete the Top10.

I know these are running totals, and not just a "who's hot" list. Still, there are some obvious oddities to the way it works out:
- Philipsen is not the 3rd best rider in the world. He isn't likely even the best sprinter in the world.
-- O'Connor is not the 9th best rider in the world. Other than the fluke stage at the Vuelta, he hasn't won anything against top competition in a long time.
-- Hirschi is at 8, Jorgensen is at 12, Skujins is at 38. If I were picking, I'd take Jorgensen first, Skujins 2nd, Hirschi 3rd. He (Hirschi) has been on a roll lately, but Mateo has won bigger races against better compeition and Skujins now routinely finishes in the top 10 of major races.
-- Interesting to see Almeida, Ayuso, and McNulty at 28,29,20. Obviously they ride for a team with Pogacar and Yates, but Almeida and Ayuso in particular fancy themselves to be lead riders.
- Ineos top rider is at 16. Intermarche, Lotto, Decathlon, and Ef all have riders ranked higher. They (Ineos) have fallen and they can't get up.

It might help INEOS if they rode in more races. Lotto 116, Intermarche 97, Decathlon 90, EF 74, while INEOS a pathetic 54.

Yes, given the way these things are calculated, quantity matters as much as quality. Still, Ineos is a disaster. The last really great rider they signed and developed into a major player was Pidcock, and even he is now kind of invisible. (and yes, I realize he does mtb and cx). The whole program has fallen apart, and even all their money can't seem to stop it from getting worse.

Indeed.

All really good points, but it highlights the value of consistency and showing up. You highlight the numerical top 10 that are getting points but aren't seen as top 10 riders. That gets me thinking about the teams (Arkea, Astana, etc.) that really need points but aren't getting them in the ways these riders are. Hirschi doesn’t win often (22, 4 at WT level), but he was already scoring high before the 5 consecutive wins. O'Conner has been a solid GC rider without the wins, similar to so many past GC riders (Landa in a long career has only 16 career wins, half at WT level). If this is the critique of riders in the top 10 on points, why are teams with good riders not getting the points they need for their team?

MidnightRider 26 September 2024 at 16:58+ 762

Agree all around. Arguably more than any other sport, just showing up and being competitive matters. In every other sport the games are scheduled and the participants all show up, whereas in cycing they pick and choose. That dynamic is made even more complicated by the dependence on sponsors, who have to pay for everything the teams do and want certain kinds of exposure in return. If you don't have a superstar on your team, you'd think that showing up for races and fighting for breaks, stage wins, minor jerseys, etc., would be vital, but as you say, not all teams pursue that strategy. Maybe for some corporate sponsors its enough to simply have the VIP suites and other perks for themselves and their clients. Can't think of any other reason so many old guard teams, including some with reasonable budgets, seem so complacent.

This is about who's scored the most points, not who's the best. Pogi could race a lot less and still be the best riders. Someone like Wout is low on the list because he hasn't been able to race that much, but he's still one of the best in the world.
