The Giro d'Italia had an overwhelmingly strong collective performance from Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux, as they managed to control the chaotic stage finale to Jesi, and launching Biniam Girmay to a very charismatic victory.
This is unbelievable. You know, the team led the entire stage and controlled the race, I have no words for what the team has done today. I am very happy," Girmay said at the end of the tenth stage. The work of Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux was absolutely essential for the stage win, and the Belgian team was perhaps the most dominant team in the day which has set the Eritrean up for the win.
After working all day long alongside Alpecin-Fenix, the team had three riders based around the stage winner after the final ascent. Domenico Pozzovivo managed to control the attacks on the final climb of the day, whilst Jan Hirt and Lorenzo Rota controlled the late attacks whilst protecting Pozzovivo who is in contention for the overall classification.
It was a relatively small group, yet the team managed to bring back all moves, with Girmay himself chasing down Mathieu van der Poel in a late move. The Italian veteran launched the 21-year old to the sprint, which was long but dominant and managed to take his first Grand Tour win.
After the stage, Girmay was hit in the eye by a champagne cork as he was taking part in the podium ceremony, and is unclear at the time being if he will take to the start of stage 11.
