Biniam Girmay emerged victorious from a spectacular tenth stage at the
Giro d'Italia, in what has proved to be an immensely popular win for fans all round. However, the celebrations ended with a trip to the hospital, after the 21-year old got hit by a champagne cork when on the podium after his win.
The very same situation happened with Mathieu van der Poel on the opening day of the race, however it failed to cause any damage to the Dutchman who today finished second.
UPDATE: Girmay has left the a hospital in Jesi at 20:20CET with a bandage around his injured eye. He has travelled back to the team hotel where he will recover throughout the night.
Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux will be making a decision on his continuation in the morning.
