Alpecin-Deceuninck's German rider Jason Osborne was involved in a crash on the first ascent of Willunga Hill. His bike broke into several pieces, as RSN reports.
The 29-year-old from Mainz posted on his Strava account: "Crash in the feed zone on Willunga Hill. The frame broke into four pieces, I stood on the side of the road waiting for a spare bike, but no one stopped." As a result, Osborne was unable to finish the race, which is particularly bitter for him, as he had previously spared himself during the stages in order to be able to attack today as a good climber. "But I couldn't finish the race without a bike."
It is even more bitter for Jason Osborne because he was actually in a good position shortly before the crash. He had been feeling good and wanted to leave his mark on today's stage - but not with an unintentional DNF, which ultimately wasn't even his fault.
Alpecin-Deceuninck will be relying on Italian rider Luca Vergallito for the remainder of tomorrow's race, according to RSN, who has just joined from the Development Team and is not too badly placed in 24th place overall, 42 seconds behind leader Stephen Williams.
