Movistar Team have been active in the market lately, with new free budget from the retirement of Alejandro Valverde, the team is looking to invest in new leaders, and Fernando Gaviria appears to be a done deal.
The information has been reported by Ciro Scognamiglio of Gazzetta dello Sport. Following some weeks of confirmation of the departure from UAE Team Emirates, the Colombian was set to move on to a new team. Not many candidates were made public, but since the start Movistar Team seemed to be an evident interest, and the two may have already reached an agreement.
Gaviria, 28 years of age, has been riding with UAE Team Emirates since 2019 where he's struggled to maintain the same level he had earlier in his career at Quick-Step. After some years of difficulty he's looking for a new challenge, and if he is to move to the Spanish team he would be an absolute leader in the bunch sprints.
Joxean Matxin, who played a key role in both his transfers to Quick-Step and UAE, has said in a recent interview that the Colombian's work ethic is low, and that “ee really needs to change something mentally. He has to do something about his motivation, in order to raise his level again." This is understood to be an issue within the team, with Gaviria looking for a new source of motivation.
