The Benelux Tour was scheduled to be raced from the 29th of August until the 4th of September this year as a traditional member of the World Tour calendar, but all the classics riders and sprinters who looked forward to testing their legs will have to wait until at least 2023 as the race organizers announced it won't be ran this year.
"For the organization, relocating the event is the only solution to avoid the problems caused by the overcrowded cycling calendar, especially in the logistics and media field," they announced last night, adding that "the pressure on that international cycling calendar causes several conflicts for which."
For many years the calendar has been growing exponentially in the August period, currently already with the Tour de Pologne, the Vuelta a Esoaña, the BEMER Cyclassics and Bretagne Classic representing World Tour, but with several one-day and stage-races filling up a much desired space in the calendar which includes post-Tour de France races, preparation races for the Vuelta a España, several classics and it's largely due to the guarrantees of good weather which pushes many organizers into that time slot.
Time slot which, due to being overfilled, has squeezed out the Benelux Tour. It would also not be possible for the Dutch police to provide guidance to the race: "Racing without the necessary police assistance is downright dangerous and not an option," further sealing the deal. The organizers are now looking for a time slot in 2023 to have the race back on the road.
In 2021 the race was won by Sonny Colbrelli who won the overall classification after thriving in the stages that went through the Ardennes and Flandres. He beat his own teammate Matej Mohoric who finished in second place, followed by Victor Campenaerts.
