The Austrian extreme cyclist Gerhard Gulewicz has died unexpectedly at the age of just 57, news that has caused deep shock in the sporting world. He took on the "Race Across America", one of the most merciless endurance races in the world, twelve times.
Through deserts, over mountain passes, whilst fighting lack of sleep and pain, Gulewicz fought his way through each of these races with unwavering determination. His unwavering ambition made him one of Austria's most influential endurance athletes.
He competed for the last time in 2017. Accompanied by a journalist who experienced him up close, Gulewicz started with a new team, fresh focus and the goal of doing it again. But in the mountains of Colorado, breathing problems forced him to abandon the race. "I didn't want to risk my health any more," he said, and retired from professional sport with dignity. It was not a setback, but a conscious decision for himself.
Gulewicz was far more than just an athlete. He was a visionary, a driving force for others, a man of principle and incredibly disciplined. He was denied victories like Fasching or Strasser, but it was his setbacks that made him a legend: He often fell - whether through illness or accident - but he always got up again.
His story shows: Greatness is not only measured in podium places, but also in character. Gerhard Gulewicz has inspired generations of athletes. His legacy lives on - in every stage, every kilometer, where the will is stronger than the pain.
