Sam Bennett has been the absolutely overwhelming figure of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque. The Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale won stage 6 this afternoon; his fourth win of the week which also helped him consolidate the overall classification.
The final stage of the race was unlikely to change the overall classification, with Sam Bennett entering in the front after winning three stages. The GC wouldn't change unless he would crash out pretty much. On the final day four rides made the breakaway of the race: Ayco Bastiaens, Ludovic Robeet, Kenny Molly May and Robert Donaldson.
Not a too threatening group, it managed to keep a steady gap throughout the day but there were several sprinter teams with interests in the fight for the stage win and ultimately they could not succeed. Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale and Israel - Premier Tech did some strong work to their benefit.
In the final circuit the front group began to disintegrate due to the fatigue. With 13 kilometers to go the final survivors from the group Bastiaens and Robeet were caught. The fight for the stage win and the preparation for the sprint truly began right after.
The peloton entered the final kilometer in a chaotic situation without leadouts, with DSM and Decathlon having a few riders close to the front. There truly was no leadout for the peloton but Pascal Ackermann was the first to launch his sprint...
But there was no stopping the Flying Irishman. Former teammate Sam Bennett put on a powerful sprint and once again took the win. It was his fourth of the week and confirms his triumph in the overall classification as well - nothing short of impressive for the sprinter who hadn't won until the start of this race. He beat Sasha Weemaes who put on a strong fight, whilst Ackermann rode to third on the day.
