Annemiek van Vleuten "can say goodbye to the sport with a smile on my face" after Tour of Scandinavia victory

Annemiek van Vleuten may have gotten her final win as a professional rider at the Tour of Scandinavia. Her final season as a pro is coming to an end, but she was still able to take a big victory before the Simac Ladies Tour where she'll bring the curtain down.

“She came very close. I didn't know if she would make it, but I gave everything and luckily I was in a good position," van Vleuten said of the final stage, where Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig came agonizingly close to topping her in the overall classification. This had been the battle brewing for the past few days of the race, but the stars aligned for the Dutch veteran, who was able to take the overall win by only 2 seconds.

"She's a bit more punchy than I am. It must have been very exciting for the spectators. When the sprinters started, I knew it would be all right with my overall victory. They sprinted faster than Ludwig, but it took them a long time to start their sprint," van Vleuten explained. After a display of consistency throughout the race, she was triumphant.

"It's nice that I can still fight for the win and that the legs are still good. I can say goodbye to the sport with a smile on my face. This race is a lot less stressful than the Tour de France," she concluded. The Simac Ladies Tour will be her final race as a pro and it starts on the 5th of September.
