According to the race director of the Vuelta a Espana, 2023's race "will be the most spectacular Vuelta," with the infamous Angliru climb set to feature on possibly stage 20.
With the official route of the 2023 Vuelta being unveiled on the 10th of January at the Palais de la Musica in Barcelona, rumours have been swirling about which potential climbs will be used. All we know for definite so far is that the race will start with a team time trial in Barcelona and will arrive in Andorra on the third day.
A summit finish on the Col du Tourmalet is also likely but race director Javier Guillén is confident that it's set to be an all-time great edition of the race. "I'm still enchanted by the last edition," he said. "In 2022 it was very attractive and the best rider of the moment won it. The Vuelta 2023 will please the public a lot.”
When speaking on the possibility of the Angrilu on stage 20, Guillén wouldn't confirm anything but did allude to its inclusion. "The mountain will decide this Vuelta, without a doubt . But in the last week there will be everything: we will have a time trial, stages with climbs and others that look like classics”.
