Egan Bernal lost his GC chances on stage six of the Tour de France. The Colombian, winner of the 2019 race, was happy with how things went for the INEOS Grenadiers team with Carlos Rodriguez and Tom Pidcock.
"A super hard stage, very short, but I think we all knew that it was going to be very important for the overall, it was crazy, a super hard pace, I think we saved the day. Carlitos (Carlos Rodriguez, ed.) was there ahead, Tom (Pidcock) was not so far," the Colombian said in a post-race interview. "So I'm happy with the feeling of having been able to help Carlitos and to improve little by little".
About his role in this Grande Boucle Bernal does not hide and makes it very clear that he becomes a domestique to try to help his team and his teammates," after struggling at the Tourmalet yesterday, but coming back to the front to push the pace in the final ascent to Cauterets. He recalls that the British squad has been very good to him and that now is the time to begin to return that trust:
"Here we are here to help, all the riders who are here at some point have helped me win races so the least I can do at this time is to help, to give one hundred percent. In the Tourmalet I stayed, I went down to the top and came back in to take gels, I started to pull and that's it," he explains. "I think I try to give back a little bit of everything they have done for me, everything the team has given me, the patience they have had for me and, nothing, that's life, as we say in Colombia 'today for me, tomorrow for you'".
