The Bolton Equities Black Spoke Pro Cycling team will come to an end this winter. New Zealand's most prominent team lit up the cycling world since it's creation in 2020 but it didn't manage to find the sponsors to continue in the coming season.
"All good things must eventually end, and regrettably, Black Spoke is no exception. I am saddened to announce that we have been unable to secure the sponsors required for the 2024 season, and Black Spoke will conclude at the end of this year," team manager Scott Guyton said in a press release. "The team's performances have exceeded our wildest dreams. We are proud to say we took a team of New Zealand bike riders and put them into some of Europe’s hardest races against the biggest teams on the planet, and after finding our feet, we shone brightly".
After three years as a continental team they climbed to Pro Tour level in 2023. The expectations were rising and so was the budget. However into 2024 it wasn't possible to assure the continuation of the project. This year the team won 15 races including both national championships in New Zealand and won races in Europe at La Roue Tourangelle and Grand Prix Cerami.
"While this marks the conclusion of Black Spoke, my hope is the legacy it leaves behind will continue to inspire and motivate the cycling community in New Zealand and beyond. The impact it has had on the sport and the opportunities it has provided for Kiwi cyclists to shine on the global stage are a testament to the vision and commitment of everyone involved."
